Beneath the digital auditoriums of Wonderful Cinema in Taichung city, Taiwan, lies a hidden store room of thousands of 35mm and 16mm movies.
But with few resources to ideally preserve them, a valuable and unique piece of cinema history slowly decays in the humid atmosphere.
Their guardian and owner of the cinema, Ping-Hsi Huang told us ‘There is a potential life inside each film can and the projector reanimates that life. So they need to be made active to keep them alive.’ And indeed, he does hold screenings down in the archive to do just that.
Ping-Hsi Huang very kindly allowed us film the cinema and his treasured collection of celluloid, and it was a perfect, if not slightly melancholy location for the world of Ghost Amber.
